Surveillance systems in the healthcare industry are used first as a deterrent. When people see a surveillance camera they are less likely to commit acts of vandalism, theft or any other inappropriate behavior. These CCTV systems are typically installed in stairwells, lobbies, outside hospitals, in public
areas. Vagrancy is common around hospitals, and this visual deterrent usually curtails it. Once something has happened, however, a surveillance system can be used as evidence of the act and for the purpose of identification. The image needs to meet certain standards, and when it does, it holds up in court as evidence. Surveillance systems usually integrate a variety of systems such as surveillance
cameras, IP network cameras, video transmission, digital video recorders and more, and some even integrate with access control systems, at gates and doors.
Surveillance systems can be used indoors and also for large outdoor areas such as parking lots. Sound systems and mass notification can also be integrated with surveillance.
